Today he had been a country music writer of songs, and perhaps a singer too.

Absolutely, I agree. He was a great lyricist and really understood human emotions.

What a fascinating life you have led! ( now you were a lot more brave than I would be around a cobra). I know that when I read your posts, I will always learn something new and thought provoking. What a fascinating person Will Carleton was! Love the poems.

I would hesitate to approach a cobra but had not much choice when it approached me. It came from behind and I sat perfectly still and carried on in meditation. I was happy to be under so many millions of stars and a beautiful moon and it stayed with me for some time, with a strange wind type noise I found out later is the hood flaring before it strikes. I did not fear it because I knew it was a snake but I have adders in the grounds at home. Only later seeing it slither away and asking about snakes there did I find out it was a cobra! They come out in the gardens at night. Being in a happy state can be protective I think, and gives us a relaxed don’t care attitude. I never went into the gardens at night again and kept it in my heart as a magical experience. ***

We have a lot of poisonous snakes in Alabama that we have learned to co exist with. Most in my area are non poisonous, and helpful in insect and rodent control. Now if you go near the river, it is a little different with water moccasins, and timber rattlers. A cobra is on a whole different level! Thank goodness, you were meditating and, evidently, the cobra picked up that you weren't a threat.

Ireland is truly magical. It looks like any other land but it has mysterious light and beauty around every bend. The west coast is extraordinary and there are omens and mysteries all over waiting to be heard, waiting to be solved… as if ….

I was too blissed out to worry thank goodness with possibly a bit of jet lag. Gosh, you are dealing with them every day, Patti, all sorts. I had my childhood in Ireland where there are no snakes at all so there was no reason to fear them. They seemed exotic. Yet, in Irish Art we have snakes… so interesting. X

I rarely find them in my yard. My cats handle that! However, you will never find me hiking in Alabama! Actually, I found a snake in my daughter’s hydrangeas today. I told her “ now we are going to have to burn down your entire yard! “ Ireland sounds like a wonderful place to live.

I tried in my youth to be that artist, always with a pad and a pencil in hand. I failed eventually, but harvested my impressions galore, and went into my chambers, conjuring up the various images in recluse.

A quick sketch, like stenography, to aid my fading memory, is all I can manage.

How wonderful the diversity, the words and the poetry.

In humble honour and love. <3 <3 <3

What a find! I love these poems. Youth and ready perhaps, but full of life and wit. And another excellent memorial from you Dwina. These really should be one by a book….

I remember the story of my uncle turning against the Salvation Army because one of bonnet wearing women refused him a dance at a Parish Social when he was a young man. When my Aunt whom he later married, died, the Salvation Army were called in to take some things away for the charity. He had hooks put into the wall and then proceeded to hang his clothes and the odd suit up on them so nothing of his would go to the S.A..
