Beautiful poem, Dwina, and a wonderful post! Gentle and poetic, it brings back memories of home and childhood. Smell does this for me more than any other sense: recently I smelled laurel leaves and saw ripe olives on an olive tree. This instantly brought me back home to my childhood and the olive harvest with my late father this time of year.
Gosh, I know what you mean. Childhood memories are so important but sometimes I believe we are capable of going even further back to possible places we have been before our present births, The scent of Olives and Dates definitely attract me and I know these are not grown in Ireland, so they do not have anything to do with my childhood there. I was surprised to learn that cucumbers, tomatoes and olives are really considered fruits rather than vegetables. My mother also used to grow marrows in Ireland and make marrow jam. I have not seen it too often in England or America.. I had a wonderful harvest of apples this year, the trees laden completely with fruit. It is lovely to be in touch again. I must check out your recent posts.
Beautiful poem, and wonderful article. As we say in Alabama, “ she was born with one foot out the door.” My brother was an airline pilot, and loved to travel, so I was able to get discounted tickets. We traveled to many countries together. Barcelona is my favorite city!
I also love Barcelona and beautiful architecture,,, I was about an hour from there recently. I loved the flowers and fauna and the trees and cacti. Amazing. ***
I love your piece! Life is certainly a strange mixture of atmospheres. Some smell hope; others, melancholy. But there are always little things that connect us to the people we love. Thank you!
